Andy Chebanne is a professor in languages and linguistics in the faculty of Humanities of the University of Botswana.

He was educated at the University of Grenoble in France, where he obtained bachelors, master’s and doctorate degrees in Language Sciences.

Since 1999, he has been a researcher and resource person for the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS), where he served as Deputy Director from 2008 to 2010. With CASAS, he participated in Africa-wide orthography harmonization agenda and promoted literacy developments in African languages.

Prof. Chebanne is a one of researchers in Khoisan languages and participates in international research collaborations (with Germans, Americans, Japanese, and regional African linguistics) to document and codify Khoisan languages. Currently he is working on the Cua and Tsua (Eastern Kalahari Khoe) cluster to document and account for their sociolinguistics dynamics.

His research on marginalized speech communities of the Khoisan got him get involved in language and ethnic issues of language and ethnic rights, rural development, language policy, and social policy.

Prof. Chebanne has numerous research awards from UNESCO, CASAS, Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA), University of Botswana, University of Kyoto.

He has published extensively in linguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnic issues, language and cultural rights, and language and policy.

At the University of Botswana, Prof. Chebanne has held administrative positions of Deputy Dean, research coordinator, and is a member of the Management Committee for the San (Khoisan) research Centre.
